Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India on Tuesday. Justice Gawai will take over as the next CJI of India on 14 May. The Ministry of Law of India on Tuesday issued a notification announced to appoint Justice Gawai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
Earlier, according to the prescribed process, on April 16, Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna recommended the name of Justice Gawai to the Central Government. Let us know that the term of current CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna is ending on 13 May.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has given this information in a post on social media platform X. He wrote, “Using the powers vested in the Constitution of India, it is happy to appoint Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India since 14 May 2025.”
Terror will be six months
Please tell that after Justice Gawai Justice KG Balakrishnan will be the second CJI coming from the Scheduled Caste community. Justice KG Balakrishnan retired from the post of Chief Justice of India in 2010. After the current CJI Khanna, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Gawai, will have a six -month term and his term will end on 23 December this year.
Justice Gawai comes from Maharashtra
Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gawai started his legal career in 1985. Justice Gawai worked with former Advocate General and High Court Judge Late King S Bhonsle before starting independent practice in the Bombay High Court in 1987.
In August 1992, he was appointed as Assistant Government Prosecution and Additional Public Prosecutor in the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court. In 2000, he became a government lawyer and government prosecutor for the same bench. On 14 November 2003, Justice Gawai was appointed Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court and became a permanent judge in 2005. Justice Gawai became a judge of the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.
