Women voter turnout has overtaken men in 14 states and union territories of India. This information has been revealed in the final voter list published on January 1, 2025. Last year, when the electoral rolls were updated with the reference date being January 1, 2024, there were 12 states and union territories where women outnumbered men. However, the total number of women voters at the national level is still 2.33 crore less than the male voters. India’s total electorate of more than 99 crore includes 50.7 crore men and 48.3 crore women (48.8%). The number of third gender voters is 48,870, with Tamil Nadu (9,161), Maharashtra (6,145), Uttar Pradesh (6,089) and Karnataka (5,095) on top.
Assam, Karnataka and Nagaland joined the list of new states
According to a Times of India report, Assam, Karnataka and Nagaland are the new names among the states/union territories where the number of women voters has exceeded that of men this year. However, the situation has reversed in Chandigarh, where male voter turnout has again exceeded female voters this year. The list of Chandigarh and Nagaland is still provisional as their final voter list will be published in a few days.
States and Union Territories that lead in women voters
The 14 states and union territories where female voter turnout is more than male this year include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. . Signs of improvement in sex ratio
Of the 36 states and union territories in the country, 22 have recorded sex ratios higher than the national average of 954. In 14 states this ratio is in favor of women. However, states like Delhi (859), Uttar Pradesh (876) and Haryana (890) drag down the national average.
Percentage share of women
According to the 2025 voter list, the share of women is 53.2% in Puducherry, 51.7% in Kerala and Manipur, 51.6% in Mizoram, 51.5% in Goa, and around 51% in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Higher voting percentage in 2024 Lok Sabha elections
Women voted 65.8% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which was higher than the voting percentage of men of 65.6%. This shows the increasing political participation of women. Experts believe that these figures are a positive sign towards the increasing awareness and political participation of women. However, there is still a need to reduce this gap at the national level.
