Syed Shuja trapped by claiming to hack EVMs used in voting, police register case

Police have registered a case against a person claiming to have hacked the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) used in voting. A person named Syed Shuja had claimed that EVMs can be hacked by tampering with their frequency. Election officials have informed that an FIR has been registered against him. He said that the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra has filed a complaint in the matter, alleging that the claims made by the accused Syed Shuja are false and baseless.

The official said that on November 30, an FIR was registered ‘against the person seen in this video’ under the BNS and IT Act at the cyber police station in South Mumbai. A video was shared by some people on social media, in which a person can be heard claiming that he can hack the EVM by tampering with the ‘frequency’ of the EVM in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, after which the elections will be held. The Commission took this action. In 2019, the Election Commission had ordered an FIR to be registered against Shuja for making a similar claim.

In a post on Hiding in some other country. A Commission official said Delhi and Mumbai Police are actively investigating the matter and are taking necessary steps to identify and arrest any person in contact with such persons involved in such ‘malicious activities’.

The officer said that such actions are a serious crime and no one involved in it will be spared. The Commission has said that EVM is a machine which cannot be connected to any network including ‘Wi-Fi’ or ‘Bluetooth’. It has also emphasized that EVMs cannot be tampered with in any way. The Supreme Court has also expressed its confidence in EVMs.
