England’s star batsman Joe Root overtook India’s great batsman Sachin Tendulkar in scoring the most runs in the fourth innings of Test cricket with England’s 8-wicket victory in the first Test match against New Zealand cricket team at Hagley Oval. Root went past Tendulkar’s mark of 1,625 runs in the fourth innings during his quickfire 22 as England took a 1-0 lead in the series. Currently he has 1,630 runs scored in the fourth innings of Test matches.
Last month, Root, who has 12,777 runs, became England’s leading run-scorer during the first Test against Pakistan, overtaking Alastair Cook. This right-handed batsman achieved this feat in just 147 Tests and 268 innings, whereas Cook achieved this feat in 161 Tests and 291 innings.
In terms of scoring most runs in Test cricket, only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid are ahead of Root. Earlier, Root had overtaken Cook in the number of centuries during the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka in August. He scored his 33rd and 34th Test centuries. He became the England player to score the most centuries in Test cricket.
