PM Modi started ONOS scheme, IIM Mumbai claims – now research expenditure will be reduced by 18 percent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s One Nation, One Membership plan will reduce research spending in India by 18%. The scheme will provide easy digital access to 13,000 e-journals, freeing government institutions from costly subscriptions. This will promote research and innovation and reduce pressure on the budget of the institute.

An important step has been taken for research and development in India. The “One Nation, One Membership” (ONOS) scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi could reduce research expenditure by about 18%, according to an IIM Mumbai report.

In this scheme, students, teachers and researchers will get access to more than 13 thousand research papers at a single click, which will free them from expensive subscriptions to international research journals.

“One Nation, One Membership” Scheme: A New Direction

Director of IIM Mumbai, Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari described this scheme as a revolutionary step in the field of research and investigation. He said that the success of research depends on its facts and data collected.

The resources and costs required to access this data have always been a challenge. The scheme will provide India’s government educational institutions and research centers with centralized digital access to more than 13,000 e-journals, making their research easier and cheaper.

Beneficiary Institutions and Researchers

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 6,000 crore from 2025-2027 to implement the scheme. Under this, more than 6,300 institutions and 1.8 crore students, teachers and researchers will benefit.

Especially institutions like Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai will now be able to avail the benefits of about 13,000 journals published by 30 leading international publishers under this scheme.

Increase in research and reduce pressure on budget

The scheme will make about 38% more publications available at IIM Mumbai, and may reduce the institute’s library budget by 18%. This money can be used in other research projects or development work of the institute. The possibility of similar savings and investment in development works will increase in 10,845 institutions across the country.

Historic step for research and innovation

This scheme will prove to be an important step towards promoting the culture of research and innovation in India as well as towards the government’s goal of “Self-reliant India” and “Developed India 2047”. This can be seen in line with the Prime Minister’s slogan of “Jai Anusandhan”.
