One’s voice becomes melodious by eating the leaves of the tamarind tree planted at Tansen’s Samadhi.


There is a tamarind tree planted at Tansen’s tomb in Gwalior. It is said that when Tansen was unable to speak in his childhood, he used to chew the leaves of the tamarind tree, due to which not only did he start speaking, but his throat also became melodious. Due to this, the musicians coming here chew the leaves of this tree. Although the old tree is not there, a new tree has been planted in its place.

There are many legends associated with the life and tomb of music emperor Tansen. One of these is the tamarind tree planted near the mausoleum of Sur Sadhak Tansen situated near the tomb of Gaus Saheb situated at the foothills of the fort on Hazira. It is said that by eating the leaves of tamarind tree, all types of throat diseases are cured and the throat becomes melodious.

Tansen also used to practice under this tamarind tree and consume tamarind leaves. Every devotee who comes to bow his head at Tansen’s Samadhi chews tamarind leaves. Due to this belief the tamarind tree itself ceased to exist. A new tamarind tree has sprouted at this very place. Now devotees consume the leaves of this tree.

Tansen was born in a Brahmin family living in Behat village of Gwalior. There is a legend that Tansen had some difficulty in speaking in his childhood. His parents took him to Mohammad Ghaus and it was here that he started practicing music. When Tansen grew up, he started speaking, but his voice was not becoming melodious. The story of the tamarind tree is that Tansen used to chew the leaves of this tamarind tree to make his voice melodious. This is why even today musicians eat the leaves of this tamarind tree.
