HIV bomb explodes in Pakistan hospital, Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz shows strictness


The whole world is on alert regarding Human Immunodeficiency Virus i.e. HIV, but gross negligence has come to light in Pakistan. Here infected kits were used during dialysis. Let us tell you, HIV attacks the immune system and such a patient is at risk of many infections and cancer.

HIV bomb has exploded in a hospital in Pakistan due to the negligence of doctors and nursing staff. Infected kits were used while dialysis of patients.

The incident took place at Nishtar Hospital in Multan in Punjab province. Taking action, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has suspended the medical superintendent (MS) of the hospital and several key staff members for alleged negligence.

HIV spread among more than 20 dialysis patients

  • The entire matter is related to dialysis patients coming to the hospital. Hospital staff reused disposable dialysis kits and dialyzers for dialysis of patients who were HIV infected.
  • The investigation also revealed that mandatory AIDS and hepatitis tests every three months were not being conducted at the hospital. This has become a big issue in Punjab. Maryam Nawaz also visited the hospital.
  • Hospital officials admitted that more than 20 patients contracted AIDS after undergoing dialysis. The equipment used in their dialysis was previously fitted to infected persons.

Arab News quoted Radio Pakistan as saying that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited Nishtar Hospital Multan and suspended six officials, including the head of the MS and Nephrology department, over serious negligence. Besides, action was also taken against other doctors and nurses.

The chief minister suspended MS Muhammad Kazim, Ghulam Abbas (head of the nephrology department), Poonam Khalid (associate professor), Mohammad Qadir (senior registrar), Dr Malia Johar, Mohammad Alamgir (medical officer in the nephrology ward) and head nurse Naheed. .

Maryam Nawaz inspected the hospital and reprimanded the officials and doctors for not following the standards. He expressed dissatisfaction over the facilities being provided to the patients and termed the situation as criminal negligence.

The Chief Minister has ordered the Health Secretary to take strict action against the responsible officials under the PEDA Act. Nawaz also directed doctors to compensate the affected patients. Despite opposition from the doctors and paramedical staff of the hospital, she stuck to her stand.
