It has been 40 years since the Bhopal gas tragedy, but its impact is still being felt on the people and their next generations. On the night of 2nd and 3rd December 1984, poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory, killing 3787 people and affecting more than five lakh people.
Dr. DK Satpathy, former chairman of the forensic department of Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, claims that 18 thousand affected people have lost their lives in the next five years since the night of the tragedy. In a program organized on the anniversary of the gas tragedy in Bhopal, Dr. DK Satpathy said that he had conducted 875 post mortems on the first day of the disaster.
People were continuously ill since the day of the gas accident.
In the next five years, he witnessed 18 thousand autopsies of gas affected people. Poison could not be confirmed in these autopsies, but the people who died had been continuously ill since the day of the gas accident. This was the effect of that poison, no one should have doubted it.
Impact on the children of pregnant women
Dr. Satpathy said that Union Carbide had always denied the effect of poison on the fetus, but in the blood tests of the pregnant women who died in this tragedy, it was seen that 50 percent of the poisonous substances found in them had reached the fetus as well. It certainly had an impact on the babies of those pregnant women who survived.
Anderson is not the only culprit, the system is too
Dr. Satpathy said that Union Carbide operator Anderson was not the only culprit for the Bhopal gas tragedy. Those people were also criminals, who knowingly or unknowingly allowed such a dangerous industry to operate in a large populated area, allowed it to run. People shared experiences related to the tragedy
In the program, Dr. HH Trivedi of Hamidia Hospital said that companies should avoid making such chemicals which have far-reaching effects and there is no information about its anti-dose. Former councilor Nathuram Soni recalled the incidents of eviction of people from the localities.
