A bill was introduced in the Australian Parliament on Thursday to protect children from the bad influence of internet media. This bill, the first of its kind in the world, will ban children under 16 years of age from internet media.
Penalty will be imposed for creating accounts of children
Australia’s Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said that if internet media platforms TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, The bill enjoys widespread political support. After it becomes law, platforms will get one year to implement the age restriction.
Children are harming themselves by watching violent material.
The Communications Minister said that almost two-thirds of teenagers aged 14 to 17 have viewed self-harming content, including violent material. In research conducted by the government, 95 percent of parents consider online safety as one of the most difficult challenges. He said that Internet media has a social responsibility and can do a better job in eliminating the harm caused on its platform.
