The 83rd annual convention of the Indian Road Congress (IRC) is going to be held from November 8 to 11 at the Science College grounds in Raipur. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will formally inaugurate the convention at Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium on November 8 at 4:30 pm.

In this convention, a special technical session will be discussed and brainstormed by IRC to prevent accidents happening due to two-wheelers. It will include engineering students, researchers and teachers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) and other higher educational institutions across the country.

Modern technology of road, bridge and culvert construction will be discussed in the convention.

This information was given by Deputy Chief Minister and Public Works Minister of Chhattisgarh Arun Sao, IRC Secretary General SK Nirmal and Principal Secretary of Public Works Department, Chhattisgarh Dr. Kamalpreet in the press conference. Officials said that modern technology of road, bridge and culvert construction will be discussed in the convention. Till now IRC has given guidelines like four lane, six lane, service road but right now the biggest challenge is to prevent accidents due to two wheelers.

Road engineering is responsible for such accidents. In this, it is important to understand the issues like what is the structure of the road, how are the turns made, what should be the surface of the road, what should be the standard of safety of two-wheelers.

IRC worried about accidents happening due to two-wheelers

IRC Secretary General SK Nirmal expressed concern over accidents occurring due to two-wheelers. He said that IRC decides the guidelines. It is the responsibility of the state governments to enforce it. He said that on the question regarding black spots, Nirmal said that repeated accidents at the same place on any road or route is a matter of concern. It is the first priority of the government to improve the roads in such places.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report 2022-23, in this year

Two-wheelers account for 44 percent (about 76,000) of those killed. This trend has continued for the last few years. Nearly 70 percent of two-wheeler riders were not wearing helmets. Earlier during the year 2021, two-wheelers have killed the maximum number of 70,000 people in road accidents in the country. Which has contributed 44.5 percent to the total road accidents. This was followed by cars (23,531 deaths) (15.1 percent) and trucks or lorries (14,622 deaths) (9.4 percent).
