In view of the political instability in Bangladesh after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sought security assurance from the country’s service chief for the organization of the Women’s T20 World Cup to be held between October 3 and 20. The Women’s T20 World Cup will be held in two cities of Bangladesh, Sylhet and Mirpur. The practice matches of the tournament will start from September 27.
According to Cricbuzz, the BCB has written to Bangladesh Army Chief General Wakar Uz Zaman seeking security assurances for the tournament to be held. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is also monitoring the situation in Bangladesh where hundreds of people lost their lives and Sheikh Hasina had to step down in violent protests against the government. The ICC may organize the tournament in the same time zone and in such a case, it will have India, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka as options.
BCB Umpiring Committee chairman Iftikhar Ahmed Mithu said, “We are trying to host the tournament. We have sent a letter to the Army Chief on Thursday seeking assurances regarding the security of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as we have only two months left now.”
