Sri Lanka is going to hold presidential elections on September 21, in which a total of 39 candidates are in the fray. Interestingly, none of these candidates are women. This information was given by the Sri Lankan Election Commission on Thursday. Among the 39 candidates in this election, three Tamil minorities and two Buddhist saints are also included.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe has also filed his candidacy for the post of President. Also, Namal Rajapaksa of the Rajapaksa family, main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and many prominent faces are in the electoral race. This election holds special importance for Sri Lanka, as the country is currently facing a severe economic crisis, which is considered to be the most serious crisis since independence in 1948.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rajapaksa family hopes to return to power<\/h2>\n

The Rajapaksa family, which lost power during Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis, is now trying to make a comeback in politics. After former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa were ousted from power, their son Namal Rajapaksa is in the electoral fray.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There were 35 candidates in the last presidential election in 2019 but this time the number of candidates has increased to 39. According to the Election Commission, the last date for nomination for the presidential election was August 15. A total of 40 nomination papers were filed but one candidate withdrew his name. Apart from this, objections were raised on three other nominations but they were rejected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Economic crisis and public discontent<\/h2>\n

Sri Lanka has recently been going through a severe economic crisis, which includes problems such as inflation, unemployment and shortage of foreign currency. This crisis has led to discontent among the public, and this discontent can have a significant impact on the election results.
