From India’s first ODi captain to Shubman Gill: Know the full list

Shubman Gill has been given the command of the Indian ODI team after the Test. On Saturday, October 4, the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI also announced a new captain for the tour of Australia. Gill became India’s 28th ODI captain after Rohit Sharma. But do you know who was India’s first ODI captain? When was Team India played the first ODI? If you have some similar questions in your mind too, then let’s answer you. India played the first ODI against England in 1974, in that match, Team India was led by Ajit Wadekar, he was the first captain of the Indian ODI team. However, India suffered a 4 -wicket defeat in that match.

However, Wadekar’s captivity career did not last long and the captain of the Indian ODI team changed only after two matches. After him, this responsibility was given to Srinivas Venkataraghavan and he was the second ODI captain of India. Venkataraghavan leads Team India in 7 matches, after which the responsibility of captaincy was entrusted to Bishan Singh Bedi, who led India in 4 ODIs.

After the continuous change in the ODI Captaincy, India got Sunil Gavaskar, who led the Indian team for a long time. Gavaskar led Team India in 37 matches.

Gundappa Vishwanath was made the captain for a match after Gavaskar, after which the responsibility was handed over to Kapil Dev before 1983. Kapil Dev led the Indian team in 74 matches and during this time he also won the 1983 World Cup.

After Gavaskar, 5 captains of the Indian ODI team changed, but no one saw the leadership quality. This was followed by Mohammad Azharuddin’s entry in 1990. Azharuddin became the first player to captain the Indian team in more than 100 ODIs. He led the team in a total of 175 matches.

Sachin Tendulkar has also commanded the Indian ODI team, after Azharuddin he was the captain of Team India in 72 matches.

In 1999, Sourav Ganguly came and changed the picture of the Indian ODI team and taught the Indian team to win on foreign land as well as the country.

Ganguly was followed by veteran players like Dravid, Sehwag, Kumble, captained in a few matches, then MS Dhoni’s entry that took the Indian team to a separate level. MS Dhoni is the only Indian to captain 200 ODIs. India led by him won the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

After this, two players earned the name as ODI captain, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Kohli led 95 and Rohit leads the team in 56 matches. Now the command is in the hands of Shubman Gill, it has to be seen how long he will be able to lead the team.
