In Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the death toll from phlegm syrup has increased. So far, a total of 12 children have been confirmed in the last 25 days. The reason for the death of these children is feared to have found poisonous chemical in cough medicine (cough syrup).
Surprisingly, all the children who died are under 5 years of age. According to the information, earlier children had complained of normal fever and cold. After which the local doctors there gave cough medicine. The condition of the children was a bit correct, but within a few days their urine decreased and then suddenly the kidney started failing. The first 6 children died. Then after this, the death figure continued to grow.
This news remains a matter of concern throughout the region. Chhindwara is one of the most affected areas of this tragedy. Apart from Madhya Pradesh, in Bharatpur and Sikar in Rajasthan, three children have been confirmed the death of phlegm syrup.
The first case came to light on 7 September when 5 -year -old Adnan Khan was rushed to the hospital after complaints of high fever and vomiting. When the condition deteriorated, he was referred to Nagpur, where doctors told that both kidney had failed. After this, new cases continued to come up and so far 9 children have died. The administration took samples of water and mice in the initial investigation, but the report was negative. At the same time, 3 children have died in Rajasthan. That is, there have been 12 deaths in both the states in total.
‘Do not use dextromethorphan’
In Sikar, a child has got action on writing a restricted drug of cough. The Health Department has decided to suspend the doctor and pharmacist. The Health Department has issued an advisory regarding the entire matter. In the advisory, doctors have been advised to take special care of the patients. Do not use the syrup with dextromethorphan salt for cough. Do not give this medicine in children under 4 years of age, identify the cause of cough in children and treat it appropriately. While giving dextromethorphan, inform the family about side effects and safe doses. If a child receives information about the side effects of dextromethorphan, then immediately inform the Directorate through the District Officer.
This medicine given to 1 lakh 33 patients
On September 28, after a complaint regarding the drug (dextromethorphan), the department has also constituted a three -member committee to investigate the entire episode. This committee includes Executive Director (Quality Control) of RMSCL, Executive Director (Logistics) and Nodal Officer of Chief Minister Free Drug Scheme. This committee will soon submit its report. It is being told that this drug of cough has been distributed to more than 1 lakh 33 thousand patients so far. But not a single complaint was received before 28 September.
Coldrif and Nextro-DS Ban on Syrup
At the same time, doubts were also raised on two phlegm syrup in MP. After which Collector Shilendra Singh immediately banned Coldrif and Nextro-DS syrup on the advice of doctors. Instructed the medical stores to provide only plane syrup to the children. Questions are also being raised about the supply of contaminated water in Parasia region. Local people are alleging that yellow and dirty water is coming from the tap, which was complained many times but no action was taken.
‘Diathylene Glocol found in Kapha Syrup’
Dr. Pawan Nandulkar, a pediatrician at Chhindwara Medical College, said that the kidney biopsy of many of the children who died were examined. It revealed the shocking revelation that diamethalin glucol found in phlegm syrup has been found to be contaminated. This syrup was given to these children, which failed their kidney.
