Millions of people took to the streets
These strikes are taking place under protests that started last month in France. The French internal ministry said that 1 lakh 95 thousand people took to the roads across the country, out of which 24 thousand were only in Paris. These demonstrations have affected regional railway services and health services. While metro services in Paris were almost normal, trains were running in limited capacity. Many teachers and health workers also participated in the strike.
Thousands of protesters marched across France against the government’s massive cuttings in next year’s budget.
What is people demanding
Trade unions are trying to maintain pressure on President Emmanuel Macron and his new Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu. Lecornu, who was appointed last month, has not been able to submit a detailed plan of his budget yet nor has appointed his ministers.
Union leaders demand that more spends be spent on public services, the government’s decision to increase retirement age should be withdrawn and more taxes should be imposed on the rich. Last month, more than five lakh people marched in small and big cities across the country. Unions say that more than 1 million striking employees and protesters had joined that protest.
Why is Protest happening?
In France, in fact, the government has planned to reduce spending on public services in next year’s budget. Unions and people demand that education, health and other public services are not cut. They want more tax to be imposed on the rich so that the general public is not burdened. The protesters also want the government to withdraw the decision to increase the age of retirement. That is, people are giving the message that they want more investment on social services rather than government deductions.
