Government of India has approved Rs 2257.55 crore for Face 2

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the virtual foundation stone of infrastructure development works in eight Indian technology institutes (IITs) during the program organized in Jharsuguda (Odisha) today. These include the face-2 project of IIT Bhilai. Other seven institutions include IIT Patna, IIT Indore, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, IIT Dharwad and IIT Jammu.
The occasion was broadcast live in the Nalanda Lecture Room of the IIT Bhilai campus. Guru Khushwant Saheb, Minister of Skill Development, Technical Education and Employment and Scheduled Caste Development of Chhattisgarh, Guru Khushwant Saheb and Ahiwara MLA Domanlal Corsewada were present at the ceremony.
Minister Guru Khushwant Saheb said in his address that it is a matter of pride for the whole country and Chhattisgarh to be the foundation stone of eight IIT projects by the Prime Minister. This will expand technical education in the state and will promote innovation. He expressed confidence that the number of research students will increase significantly when IIT Bhilai’s face-2 construction is completed.
Face-2 Project: New direction of technical education and innovation
The Government of India has sanctioned Rs 2,257.55 crore for face-2 construction on 29 May 2025, out of which Rs 1,092 crore will be spent on complex construction. This phase will develop an additional area of 1 lakh 51 thousand 343 square meters, including new engineering and science departments, state -of -the -art laboratories, ICT competent lectures and prototype facilities.
The student number will increase from 1,500 to 3,000. The project will also add facilities like hostel, mess hall, sports complex, open air theater, canteen, sports ground, tennis court, residential building, health center and shopping complex. The most important initiative of Face-2 is the first research park in Chhattisgarh, which will be established at a cost of Rs 96 crore. The project has been targeted to be completed by October 2028.
IIT Bhilai was established in the year 2016. 1090.17 crore was sanctioned for face-1 construction, under which smart, environment-sensitive and student-centric campus was developed in an area of 1 lakh 34 thousand 450 square meters, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 20 February 2024. The campus has received several honors including GRIHA LD rating and NSCI Safety Award 2021.
Achievements and features of IIT Bhilai
The campus of IIT Bhilai is embellished with the entry corridors inspired by tribal art, which is a symbol of the cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh. The institute is currently leading more than 300 national and international projects worth about Rs 185 crore and so far 30 patents have been recorded.
The institute hosts IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IbITF), a company IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IBITF), installed under the National Mission on the interdisciplinary cyber-physical systems (NM-BICPs), the Department of Science and Technology. Recently, IBTF has been nominated as ‘Category-a Hub’ to encourage fintech based innovations for the financial sector.
A remarkable initiative of IIT Bhilai is the Vidya Review Center, Chhattisgarh, a centralized, real -time digital monitoring system for schools, teachers and students across the state. The platform identified and abolished them by identifying 10 lakh non-existent students records, saving about 40 crores and it was possible to distribute correct distribution of 60 lakh textbooks.
Apart from this, the institute has started a total of 54 tribal development projects across the country for the upliftment of tribal communities through intensive technical solutions, on which Rs 19 crore is being spent.
Current and future
Currently B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc in IIT Bhilai. And Ph.D. There are 1,525 students studying under programs. This number will reach 3,000 with face-2 development. This will establish the institute not only in the field of teaching and research but also as a major center in industry cooperation and technological development.
