Ladakh demonstrated a massive demonstration on Wednesday under the leadership of the youth to demand state status and inclusion of the sixth schedule. There was a clash between the protesters and the police, in which the situation became uncontrollable. The BJP office in Leh was set on fire and a car parked outside was also burnt. Additional security forces have been deployed to handle the situation.

Increased pressure before talks
These demonstrations have taken place at a time when new talks are to be held between the Central Government and Ladakh representatives on 6 October. The delegation will include members of Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). It is believed that through this protest, pressure is being made to intensify the talks on the government.
Movement started with hunger strike
The youth branch of LAB started a 35 -day hunger strike from 10 September. During this time, 2 out of 15 people reached the hospital, after which the protest became more fierce. The agitators have clearly stated that the movement will continue until their demands are met.
Sonam Wangchuk’s appeal
Sonam Wangchuk, a famous environmentalist and part of the movement, has appealed for peace. Reacting to the fresh clashes, he said-
“There were very sad incidents in Leh. My appeal for my peaceful movement failed today. I request the youth to stop violence, it will only harm our motive.”
Demand issued from 2019
It is worth noting that since the status of Ladakh (Ladakh Protest) in 2019, the local people have been demanding the inclusion of the state status and the sixth schedule. LAB and KDA have repeatedly stated that the rights and identity of the people of Ladakh will not be safe without getting state status.
