New rates of GST apply, how much will your entertainment affect?

How much impact the GST 2.0 on your entertainment?

Since 22 September 2025, new rates of Goods and Services Tax (GST) have been implemented across the country. This time the central government has reduced the rates of GST from 4 slabs to 2, due to which two main rates of 5% and 18% have become effective. The effect of this change is visible on many sectors, but for the entertainment industry, it can prove to be a mixed decision with no profit-no loss.

Talking about the entertainment industry, while some things have been reduced on one side, there are only old rates in some segments. So let’s know GST What is the opinion of the people of the entertainment industry about it.

Gadar director welcomed

Gadar 1 and mutiny 2 director Anil Sharma said, “This decision should definitely be welcome. Because hundreds of things are needed to make a film and the GST will reduce the problem of cash flow now and it is a big support for the industry.”

There has not been a big change

Film trade analyst Sumit Kadale says that the new GST rates will not have any major impact on the film industry. Even though tickets with less than 100 rupees will become cheap, such tickets are sold only in small cities or single-screen theaters. At the same time, the GST rate will be 18% on tickets above Rs 100, in which no change has taken place. “

What about TV and cinema?

The biggest benefit in this new system of GST will be available to those who want to enjoy entertainment on the big screen. Premium television with 32 inches larger screen was earlier 28% GST, which has now been reduced to 18%. This will reduce the prices of premium TV a lot, which is expected to increase their sales in the festive season. But no major changes have been made on the tickets of films so far. Currently, 12% on tickets of less than Rs 100 and 18% GST on tickets of more than Rs 100 is still applicable. Actually, the cinema industry was demanding a cut in this rate for a long time so that the audience returns to the theater, but their demand has remained incomplete at present.

Impact on broadcasters and OTT

Only 18% GST is still applicable to TV broadcasting, DTH and cable services. Broadcasters had also demanded to reduce GST rates to 5%, but they have not been given any relief on this. That is, to watch TV, you have to pay the same as before. However, the subscription on the OTT platform also comes under the 18% GST, so there has been no change in the rates on this too.

Impact of GST on artists and organizers

There has been no change in GST even for artists and event organizers. Artists have 18% GST on services and event management. However, if artists associated with folk art (Folk dance) or classical arts are paid up to Rs 1.5 lakh for a show, then their services are exempted from GST.
