The Income Tax Department on Monday extended the last date for filing income tax returns (ITR) to 16 September (today). The last date for filing ITR for individuals, Hindu undivided families (HUFs) and those who do not have to audit their accounts was extended from 31 July to 15 September.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement that the last date for filing ITR for the year 2025-26 is being extended from September 15, 2025 to 16 September 2025.
ITR deadline extended
In a statement issued by CBDT, the e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from 12 am to 2.30 pm on September 16, to make changes in utilities. 11.48 pm on 15 September. The time limit of ITR was extended after chartered accountants and common people complaining of disturbances on the e-filing portal on social media.

Complaint of technical disturbances in depositing returns
The Income Tax Department said on Monday that more than seven crore income tax returns have been filed so far. This has been said by Internet users to complain of disturbances on the portal and the demand to increase the deadline. Following the demand to increase the deadline, the department has extended the deadline for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26).
Batak filed more than seven crore ITR
The department wrote on the social media forum X, so far more than seven crore ITRs have been filed and the count is still going on. The department urged all those people to file their returns, who have not yet filed an ITR for the assessment year 2025-26. As of 31 July last year, 7.28 crore ITRs were filed.
In the last few days, many chartered accountants and others have claimed on social media that there are disturbances while downloading tax payments and AIS (annual information details) on the Income Tax Portal. Internet users also complained on Monday that they were not able to log in to the e-filing portal.
Last date for filing ITR
The Income Tax Department had declared a statement aired on social media on X late on 14 September night, stating that the last date for filing ITR has been extended till September 30, 2025. The department requested taxpayers to rely only on the handle of Income Tax India for any information. The department had said that the last date for filing ITR is September 15. However, now it has been extended one more day.
Helpdesk working continuously
On a complaint made about the problem in uploading ITR and tax payment, the Income Tax Department said on Monday morning that the e-filing portal is working well. Please clean your browser cache or try to reach the portal from another browser. The Income Tax Department said that its helpdesk is constantly working to help taxpayers filing ITRs, tax payments and other related services and taxpayers are being helped through phone, live chat, webx session and X.
