The terror of stray dogs in the capital is constantly increasing, but the Municipal Corporation has not yet been able to find a doctor to start the Shelter House built for their prevention. The dog shelter prepared in Sondongri at a cost of about Rs 1.5 crore has been incomplete for the last two years. While this center has the facility of keeping 150 dogs, sterilization operation theater and creamation. The NGO has also been selected for operations, but it has not been started yet due to non -appointment of doctors.
More than 100 dog bite cases every day
The situation is that more than 100 people are arriving at Ambedkar and the district hospital daily due to dog bites. In the last six months, more than 1200 cases were registered in Mekahara Hospital and more than 1200 cases in other centers including Hamar Hospital. The condition of many victims was so serious that even committed suicide due to fear of rabies. According to the Human Rights Commission, in 2023, 1.20 lakh people in the entire state were victims of dog bite, in which more than 51 thousand cases were registered from Raipur alone.

During the assembly session, BJP MLA Sunil Soni questioned the status of dog bytes and shelters. Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai said in response that 51,730 cases have been reported in the last three years. He said that dog shelter is being constructed by the corporation and sterilization and vaccination campaign has been intensified.
Dog Shelter House is ready in Sondongri
The plan to keep the dreaded, sick and injured dogs in the dog shelter house was made two years ago. The center is now ready in Sondongri at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. The process of selection of NGOs for the operation of this dog center has also been completed, but the Municipal Corporation has not been able to arrange doctors. Therefore, the dog shelter house of Sondongri is not being operational. Whereas in this shelter house, there is a system of keeping dogs injured in more than 150 dreaded, sick, road accidents from locality and colonies.
Supreme Court instructions
- Food to dogs in public places will be completely banned.
- Feeding zone will be created in every municipal area.
- The violation will be processed and the helpline number will be released.
- It is recommended to enact laws to control dogs.

Maximum dogs should be sterilized- Mayor
Mayor Meenal Choubey of Municipal Corporation Raipur said that an NGO has been finalized for Shelter House. But the sterilization has been very low depending on the amount of dogs. It is our endeavor to sterilize more and more dogs.
