Sourav Ganguly gets a big responsibility in SA20, became the head coach of the team

New Delhi

Former Indian captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly will now be seen in the world of coaching. Ganguly has been appointed as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals before the upcoming SA20 season, which starts on 26 December. Ganguly will replace former England batsman Jonathan Trot, who will be his first term in franchise cricket as a head coach.

Capitals will hop that Ganguly’s appointment will change the fate of the team. The franchise was defeated in the final against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape after being at the top of the group stage in the first season of the SA20. Although his performance has fallen in recent years, the team finished fifth in both 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons and also missed the playoffs.

This new chapter adds another dimension to Ganguly’s cricket journey. Although this is his first formal role as a head coach, former Indian captains bring full experience of leadership. Between 2015 and 2019, he served as the President of the Bengal Cricket Association. He then became a mentor of Delhi Capitals in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Soon after, Ganguly held the post of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and held the post till 2022.

Ganguly also matches his role as a cricket director in JSW, both co-owners of Delhi Capitals and Pretoria Capitals to go to Pretoria Capitals. His appointment indicates JSW’s intention to strengthen his SA20 project and Ganguly will be deeply involved in shaping the team’s future. The first major challenge for Ganguly will come on 9 September, when the SA20 players will be auctioned. Capitals are expected to take bold steps in this auction as they want to rebuild their team under the leadership of their new head coach.
