Trump-Putin’s conversation welcomed, India supported peace in Ukraine; PM Modi said this on Jailonsky post

Modi, Putin, Trump and Jailonski.

India welcomed the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the world wants the end of this struggle soon. In a message thanking Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky for best wishes on India’s Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished for “peace, progress and prosperity for our friends in Ukraine”.

This was the first US-Russia summit since the Russian leader started an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, for which Trump and Putin met in Alaska for about three hours. The two leaders made statements after their meeting without answering the questions of journalists and there were no clear indications that how the two sides want to move forward to end the war in which more than one million people of Ukraine and Russia have been killed or injured.

India welcomed Putin-Trump’s conversation

A statement has been issued by Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, saying that India welcomes the conversation between Putin-Trump. His leadership in the direction of peace is very commendable. ” He said, “India appreciates the progress made at the summit. Negotiations and diplomacy can lead to the way forward. The world wants to see the end of the ongoing struggle in Ukraine. “

On Friday, PM Modi replied on social media on Independence Day, saying that he gives great importance to the joint commitment of both sides to make “more close relations between India and Ukraine”. Modi further said: “We wish for a future full of peace, progress and prosperity for our friends in Ukraine.”

Galansky congratulated the people and leadership of India on Independence Day and said in his social media post: “We hope that India will contribute to the efforts to end the war, so that our freedom and sovereignty are really safe.”

India’s eye on Trump-Putin meeting

After the talks in Alaska, Trump told the media with Putin that the two sides had agreed to “many points”, although they have not “fully agreed” on some issues. Putin spoke of reaching an understanding between the two sides that will help them to get closer to the goal of ensuring Ukraine’s safety and “paving the way for peace in Ukraine”.

The Indian side kept a close watch on the summit, mainly because Trump threatened to impose a secondary ban on India due to the continuous purchase of oil from Russia. Trump recently imposed 25% tariff on India for the purchase of Russian energy products, while 25% mutual tariff on Indian goods has already been implemented.

Trump argues that India is making profit by selling most of its Russian oil purchases in the open market and funding the Russian war machine. India has accused the US and the European Union (EU) of adopting double standards in terms of sanctions and said that it will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.

Prior to the summit, Trump had set a time limit of August 8 for Russia to agree on the ceasefire in Ukraine or to face rigorous restrictions. After a meeting with Putin and a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelanski and several European leaders, he said in a social media post that “the best way to end the fierce war between Russia and Ukraine is to reach a peace agreement directly, which will end the war, not just a ceasefire agreement.”

PM Modi in favor of peaceful solution

Both Trump and Jailnsky announced that they would meet in Washington on Monday and thereafter a tripartite meeting with Putin could be held. Jailonsky said on social media, “Ukraine confirms his readiness to work with its best to establish peace. It is important that America’s strength has an impact on the development of the situation.” He supported Trump’s proposal of the trump meeting between Ukraine, the US and Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for ending enmity in his conversation with Putin and Jailonsky since the onset of the war between Russia and Ukraine and returning to the path of talks and diplomacy. Both Putin and Jailonsky called Modi to make Modi aware of the situation before the meeting in Alaska.

PM Modi last year made separate trips to Russia and Ukraine and urged the two leaders to return to conversation to find peaceful solutions. He also said that the conversation under the guise of gun cannot be successful and solution cannot be found in the battlefield.

India has never publicly condemned Russia’s actions nor participated in international efforts made aimed at ending the struggle. Indian officials have said that New Delhi has played a role in the exchange of messages between Moscow and Kiev.
