Team India’s workload management is in discussion. The great Sunil Gavaskar has severely criticized it. He wants to erase it from the dictionary of Indian cricket. However, he had made it clear that he was not saying this in the context of Jaspreet Bumrah because the Indian star was not playing all the 5 matches against England due to ‘Varllload, not the reason for injury’. Now another veteran has reacted sharply to the workload management. Describing it as a ‘drama’, he has asked whether the Physio team will choose now?
Talking about Jasprit Bumrah, he played only 3 out of 5 Tests against England. Some former cricketers like Irfan Pathan have questioned their not playing in important matches. Now according to a PTI report, Bumrah Asia Cup can play T20 tournament but he can be rested in the first Test against the West Indies in October. This star of India was not available to the team on many important occasions due to Pacer injury and workload. He did not play in the Champions Trophy.
Former BCCI chief selector Sandeep Patil said in a conversation with Mid-Day, ‘I am surprised why the BCCI is agreeing on it? Has the captain and head coach become more important? Now we have to expect that Physio will sit in the meeting of the selection committee now? Will he decide? ‘
Like Gavaskar, Patil also said in a very strict tone, ‘When you are elected to your country, you have to live for the country. You are a warrior. I have seen Sunil Gavaskar batsman all the five days of a match. I have seen Kapil Dev bowling for most days of the Test match and then throwing the ball in the net. He never asked for a break. Never complained and his career lasted more than 16 years. I myself did not leave the next Test after a head injury in Australia in 1981.
Sandeep Patil said, ‘Modern players have all the facilities. There was no rehab program in our time. In those days we used to play despite injury. We were happy playing for the country, no drama. ‘
