Tension has increased in both countries since US President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on Indian imports on Wednesday to 50 per cent. Trump signed an order to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on imported goods from India on continuing oil purchases from Russia. Although questions are also being asked about imposing 50 percent tariff on India, on which President Trump said that many more ban will be imposed.
During a press conference at the White House, President Trump was asked about India’s response when the tariff was doubled to 50 per cent on Wednesday. New Delhi expressed disappointment on this tariff, saying that America is putting an additional tariff to take such steps on India, while many other countries are doing the same. “
Why additional tariffs on India itself?
On the question related to why additional tariffs on India, President Trump said, “It has been only 8 hours now. So let’s see what happens. You will get to see more now… You will get to see many secondary ban.”
Plan to impose more tariffs on China?
President Trump was specifically asked questions about China, which is another important country trading with Russia, and is he planning to increase tariffs on that country too. Trump replied, “This may happen. I don’t know, I can’t tell you right now. But we have done this with India. We are probably doing this with some other countries, one of which can be China.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Donald Trump’s party leader Nikki Haley, while supporting India and describing it as a strong associate of America, requested not to give “exemption to China”. He said on the social media platform x, “India should not buy oil from Russia. But China, which is a big buyer of Russia and Iran oil, is banned for 90 days with tariffs. China should not be exempted and should not spoil its relations with strong partners like India.”
Trump’s additional tariff will be implemented from when
Amid speculation that has been released for the last several days, President Trump on Wednesday signed the executive order in which 25 per cent of the Indian goods entering the US, apart from the 25 per cent tariff declared last week, have been imposed 25 per cent of additional tariffs.
During his previous tariff declaration, Trump threatened India to impose heavy fines, citing the purchase of energy and military equipment from Russia. This additional 25 percent tariff will be applicable from August 27, and this will cause a lot of damage to Indian exporters as compared to countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam as these countries have imposed tariffs from 19% to 20%.
India strongly condemned this new decision of President Trump, calling it “unfair and indispensable”. Earlier, India itself accused the US and the European Union of improperly targeting New Delhi over trade with Russia.
