Is Yamuna water being cleared, what did the Delhi government tell?

Improvement in water quality of Yamuna River

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Saturday that the quality of water of Yamuna river has improved significantly in the month of July. According to the report of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the pollution in Yamuna water has decreased in July compared to June. It indicates that the water is already clean and better. Manjinder Singh Sirsa credited the water quality of the Yamuna river to the efforts of the government being made for the cleanliness of Yamuna. He said that such improvement did not happen suddenly or due to weather, but it is a result of constant human efforts.

The minister said that Rs 500 crore was allocated for cleaning the Yamuna river. Which are being used to correct sewage treatment plants, drains and to prevent untreated waste inside the river. According to a government statement, DPCC has collected water samples from eight surveillance places including Palla, Wazirabad, ISBT Bridge, ITO Bridge, Nizamuddin Bridge and Okhla Barrage.

Rapid improvement in water quality

According to the report, an essential indicator of organic pollution has recently seen a rapid decline in the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The BOD level on the ITO Bridge where 70 mg per liter was in June, it decreased to only 20 mg per liter in July. Similarly, on Okhla barrage, this figure has come down from 46 mg per liter to 8 mg per liter. This shows that water quality is improving rapidly.

The impact of the efforts of the government shows

In the month of June, the level of oxygen (DO) dissolved in water in some parts of the river fell almost zero. However, a significant improvement in DO levels in areas such as Palla and Wazirabad was observed, indicating the availability of better oxygen in water and the improvement of the oxygenization process.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa further said that these results show that our method is working. We are not celebrating it right now. The work of improving the environment is going on in Delhi.

Delhi’s air quality also improves

The improvement in water quality is being linked to the environmental action plan 2025 with environmental benefits. In Delhi, in the month of July, the air quality was good or satisfactory for 29 days in 31 days.
