Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei
Iran’s struggle with Israel-US has not yet spent much time that another country has come under the radar of Iran. Azerbaijan is working on a project that can cause disturbance in Caucasus. The aim of Azerbaijan’s proposed Zangageur Corridor is to connect its mainland to the nails excoclave via the southern Sun Sunrut province of Armenia, bypassing the existing route passing through Iran. This path will connect Azerbaijan with Europe-Asia without Iran.
Baku wants to control this corridor, which will weaken the sovereignty of Armenia and change its historical boundaries with Iran. Iran has opposed this earlier also.
After Azerbaijan’s victory in the 2020 Nagorno-Karkabakh war, the idea was strengthened, which had regained the occupied areas of Armenia since the 1990s. Although new transport contacts were mentioned in the peace agreement, it has not given Azerbaijan control over Armenian land.
Last year, Iran deployed army and stopped the scheme
Turkey and Azerbaijani leaders tried to pursue the plan in 2023-2024, but Iran allegedly stopped them by deploying their army near Armenia. However, Baku and Ankara are considering alternative strategies, including American partnership. Recently, the US Ambassador to Türkiye suggested that Washington could build and manage the corridor, which Aliyev had the courage to reject any agreement.
Iran strongly opposes the Jangzur corridor and considers it a threat to its national security and regional impact. Many experts believe that the purpose of this corridor is to isolate Iran and Russia, incite separatism and implement ground blockade.
Iran deployed army
As soon as the talk of this project started again, Iran has strengthened its limit and adopted a policy of active prevention, indicating that if this plan progresses, there may be military conflict.
