Madhya Pradesh High Court (File)
After Uttar Pradesh, in Madhya Pradesh these days, discussions of changing the names of districts, cities and towns are in full swing. Meanwhile, the matter has also reached the threshold of the High Court regarding the name of Madhya Pradesh. The significant turn came in the midst of the change of name when VK Nasa, a resident of Bhopal, filed a petition in the Jabalpur High Court in which he objected to the use of MP or MP.
The petitioner said that the name of the state in the constitution is clearly Madhya Pradesh, despite this, most people use it as MP or MP in daily life. He appealed to the court to direct the state and central government not to use such brief names.
The petition of Madhya Pradesh High Court Division Bench Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf dismissed this petition. The court clarified that a summarization of the name is not an unconstitutional or illegal work. The court said that it is a common practice to give summarizing names all over the world. For example, the court said that the United States of America is written and spoken to the USA and the United Kingdom.
Necessary to save space and time
Similarly, calling Madhya Pradesh MP or Madhya Pradesh simplifies the identity of the state and not its name changes. Along with this, the court further said that to save space and time in modern writing and communication system, it has become necessary to use such brief forms. From government work to vehicle registration and tax system, the use of states’ codes and short form has now become a standard process.
Madhya Pradesh or MP is not wrong
The court also said that the petitioners could not clarify what is public interest in this petition. Only on the basis that people call “MP”, it cannot be called constitutional violation. The High Court rejected this argument and said that it is neither practical nor legally necessary to restrict the use of the brief name prevalent for a state. At the same time, this decision of the High Court has made it clear that saying MP or Madhya Pradesh is not a wrong thing, but is part of a spontaneous language style developed over time.
