‘Wetland Friends’ for conservation of biodiversity… new initiative of CM Vishnu Dev Sai on Environment


A high -level workshop was organized on Monday at Dandakaranya Arranya Bhawan in Nawa Raipur for the protection of biodiversity and wetlands (Wetlands). On this occasion, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Assembly Speaker Dr. Raman Singh, Leader of Opposition Dr. Charandas Mahant, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Saw, Vijay Sharma and all the cabinet ministers and MLAs were present.

Addressing the workshop, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai said that the concept of developed Chhattisgarh is not only fulfilled by the development of infrastructure, but only by protecting the environmental balance and biological diversity. He called upon every public representative and citizen to consider personal obligation for biodiversity and weightland protection and convert this campaign into a mass movement by becoming ‘wetland friend’.

Biodiversity and Wetlands

Presiding over the workshop, Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap said that the protection of biodiversity and wetlands is not only environmental need, but it is also a question of security of our future generations. He urged all the public representatives to ensure participation in the conservation of biodiversity and spread public awareness by becoming a wetland friend.

In the program, Chairman of Chhattisgarh Biodiversity Board Rakesh Chaturvedi gave extensive presentation. He gave detailed information about the 1992 Earth Summit, Biodiversity Act 2002, the role of the National Biodiversity Board and the structure and functions of biodiversity management committees. He also informed that Chhattisgarh is the third state in the country, where biodiversity management committees are working effectively.

Wetlands ecological balance

In the context of wetland protection, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Arun Kumar Pandey said that Wetlands play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. Giving information about the process of functioning of the State Wetland Authority and the formation of district level wetland protection committees, he said that through these committees, the monitoring and conservation of the wetlands is being strengthened at the local level.

At the end of the workshop, all the public representatives and officials were joined as Wetland friends and appealed to play an active role for the protection of biodiversity and humidity. This participation will be helpful in giving environmental consciousness the form of mass movement in the state.

On this occasion, Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) Richa Sharma, Chhattisgarh Forest Force Head. Srinivas Rao, Member Secretary of Biodiversity Board Rajesh Kumar Chandele and many senior officials and experts were present.
