Who is Nimisha Priya?

For better future and financial strength, she sent her husband and daughter to India in 2014 and continued to work in Yemen. There he started a clinic in collaboration with local citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi, as foreign nationals cannot open a clinic alone.
Nimisha later alleged that Mahdi claimed to marry them, exploited them and took away the passport by taking them hostage. To get out of this painful situation, he gave medicine with the intention of making Mahdi unconscious, but died. After this, he enlisted the help of the local woman to hide the body.
Legal battle and efforts of the Government of India
After the arrest in 2017, the Yemen’s court sentenced Nimisha Priya to death, which was also retained in 2023. The Government of India intervened at many levels, tried to waive the punishment through blood money, but this effort also remained inconclusive.
Nimisha’s mother Premkumari went to Yemen and appealed to the authorities to save the daughter’s life. Human rights organizations and common people have also demanded the Government of India to intervene internationally.
