Indore
On May 2025, after starting a commercial service on the 6.3 km Super Prorty Corridor, more than 50,000 people traveled with free facility in the initial facility, but the passenger number fell below 20,000 after the fare was implemented from June 8. According to Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, the fare is Rs 20-30. People say that they are choosing bus or auto due to having a small route and less station. The discount scheme was launched, but its effect was limited.
The corridor of the metro is from Gandhi Nagar to Super Corridor Station No. 3, which has 5 stops. The rebate was given for the first three months after the fare was implemented – 75%, 50%for the third week, and 25%by the third month. Nevertheless, people are choosing less metro. The situation may improve due to increase in line to Radisson Square. There is also a plan to connect with AICTSL buses.
According to officials of Indore Metro Rail Corporation, the metro was inaugurated on 31 May and passengers were made free till 8 June. During this period, 26,803 on June 1 and 18,087 passengers traveled to the train. Fare and tickets became mandatory from June 9 with rent discount. On this day only 4022 passengers traveled. This number of June 10 was reduced to 3350 and about 3 thousand on Wednesday. Corporation officials are expected to increase the number of passengers at the week end.
Fare discount will be available till June 15
There is a ticket of Rs 5 on traveling between two stations in Indore Metro and 8 rupees for traveling up to five stations. Metro fares are being given a discount of 75% from 8 to 15 June. The passenger will have to pay a fare of Rs 8 if he lands at the fifth station Veerangana Jhalkari Bai (TCS) station from Devi Ahilyabai Holkar station (Gandhi Nagar). If the passenger travels from Veerangana Jhalkari Bai station to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar station, he will have to take a ticket of 8 rupees again.
Rent or access to the reason for shortage?
The implementation of fare is a major reason for passenger shortage. 20-30 rupees seems expensive for short distances. IT employees take the metro in the super corridor, but common people consider auto and bus to be cheaper. Only 5 stations and 6.3 km route is limited. Time and expenses increase in reaching stations. People take bus or auto after seeing facility and cost. There is a need to increase the scope of the metro.
Facilities and challenges
The metro has facilities such as platform screen doors, QR-code tickets, and real-time tracking. Trains are air-divisions, wheelchair space for disabled and audio system for visually impaired. But ticketing is still manual, as the automatic system is under investigation. Third rail and AI-based control are environment-friendly. Delay in route expansion is a challenge. The major change is difficult till the line is completed till Radisson Square.
