Jail superintendent Arshad Shah said that the incident of jailbreak occurred when the prisoners of circle number 4 and 5 were taken out of their barracks as security precautions during the earthquake. According to the report of Jio News, he said, “At that time more than 600 prisoners were outside their barracks. Amidst the situation of chaos, 216 managed to escape.” He said that more than 135 prisoners are still absconding and efforts to search are on.

In the video shared on social media, the sound of heavy firing can be heard, it is being claimed that it is from the areas around Malir Jail. In other footage, some prisoners are seen running on the roadside.

At the same time, Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar described this situation as one of the most serious jailbreaks in recent years. Speaking in the early hours of Tuesday, he said that the escape incident occurred when 700 to 1,000 prisoners were gathered near the main gate after the evacuation. He said that about 100 prisoners forcibly opened the gate and fled.

However, on the other hand, police officials said that the prisoners broke the outer wall of the jail, which had weakened due to many earthquake tremors of low intensity felt in the area since Sunday.
