Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection has increased by 16.4 percent to more than Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May. This information was given in the government data released on Sunday. Earlier, in April, the GST collection reached its life time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore.
What is detail

The total GST revenue increased by 13.7 percent to about Rs 1.50 lakh crore due to domestic transactions in May, while GST collection increased by 25.2 percent to Rs 51,266 crore from imports. In May, the total central GST revenue was Rs 35,434 crore, the state GST revenue was Rs 43,902 crore and the integrated GST collection was around Rs 1.09 lakh crore. Revenue from cess was Rs 12,879 crore. In May, 2024, the GST collection was Rs 1,72,739 crore.

Meanwhile, the total refund declined by four percent to Rs 27,210 crore during the month. The net GST collection during the month was about Rs 1.74 lakh crore with an annual increase of 20.4 percent. Deloite India partner MS Mani said that the difference in increase in GST collection in states is being seen on a wide basis. In such a situation, there is a need to do intensive analysis of such areas in each state, which are important to him.

GST collection is so much about refund

According to GST collection data, even after the refund, there has been an increase of 20.4% in May 2025 on an annual basis. Let us tell you that in May 2025, the net GST collection is Rs 1.73 lakh crore, which was only Rs 1.44 lakh crore in May 2024. In May 2025, the GST refund was Rs 27,210 crore, which is 4 percent less year after year. At the time of the budget, the government had expected an 11 percent increase in GST collection in this financial year, which has expected a GST collection of Rs 11.78 lakh crore including Central GST and GST compensation cess.
GST collection so reduced compared to April

In April 2025, the government had an income of Rs 2.37 lakh crore from GST. On an annual basis, the GST collection was 12.6 percent growth in April. In this, GST received from import duty was Rs 51,266 crore and GST from domestic source was Rs 1,49,785 lakh crore. In May, Gros GST collection reached Rs 4.37 lakh crore, which is more than Rs 14.3 percent compared to Rs 3.83 lakh crore collected in the same period last year.

Large states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have registered a growth of 17 percent to 25 percent in the collection, while big states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have shown an increase of up to six percent. In some states like Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, GST collection has increased by an average of 10 percent. Mani said, “Therefore, the average growth across the country is not equally reflected in states due to regional or seasonal factors, which require intensive data -based analysis.”

The GST Council should meet once every three months. However, the GST Council has not met for the last four months. The last meeting was held in December and no meeting has been held since then. GST rates can be amended only in the GST Cuisan meeting. It was expected that the GST Council meeting would be held by late April or the first week of May, but now sources say that it is less likely to be before the end of May. Let us know that after giving relief in income tax in the budget of February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in March that preparations are being made to provide relief in GST too. In such a situation, everyone is waiting for the next meeting of the council.
