The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing income tax return (ITR) for the assessment year 2025-26 from July 31 to September 15, 2025. In the deadline for filing income tax returns, this expansion will provide more time to taxpayers to collect documents and to coordinate with changes in guidelines and compliance norms. There have been several significant amendments in ITR form, system development needs and TDS Credit Reflection. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) tweeted, “This will ensure a spontaneous and more accurate filing experience for all. The formal notification will be released soon.”

According to officials, the deadline of ITR is to ensure a spontaneous and more accurate tax filing experience for all categories of taxpayers.

CBDT said that a formal notification about the revised deadline will be released soon. This expansion provides very important relief to salary employees, businessmen and other non-audit taxpayers, which usually faces challenges at the last minute during the filing season. Texpears are advised to use extra time to verify Form 26AS, match TDS Credit and file accurate returns.

12 Tax exemption up to lakhs, But…

Significantly, New Tax Reseam has been implemented in the country since 1 April 2025. No tax will have to be paid on income of 12 lakhs. Apart from this, along with New Tax Regim, Rs 75000 standard deduction is also going to be available. That is, whose salary income is Rs 12.75 lakh annually, they will not have to pay any income tax. Let me tell you, earlier there was no income tax on income up to Rs 7 lakh. Middle class is the most benefiting of this.

However, this time there will be no benefit of 12 lakh tax exemption in filling ITR, as it will be filled for ITR FY 2024-25 and the tax exemption is given for FY 2025-26.
