An FIR was lodged against him late Wednesday night at the Manpur police station of Mhow on a controversial statement given by the Minister of Tribal Affairs Vijay Shah of Madhya Pradesh about Colonel Sophia Qureshi. The minister had filed an application in the Supreme Court to cancel the FIR, on which he was also reprimanded from there. The Supreme Court has refused to stay the order of the High Court.
It is noteworthy that taking automatic cognizance, the High Court had directed to register an FIR against Vijay Shah. The case is to be heard in Madhya Pradesh High Court today. Today, a link to the video will also be placed on the High Court table, in which the minister had commented on Colonel Sophia.
Demand to remove Congress minister from post
Here Congress is demanding the removal of Minister Vijay Shah from the post. Demonstrations were also held against Minister Shah in many cities including Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur in the state.
Case registered in these sections, life imprisonment or punishment up to 7 years
Section 152 of BNS (Indian Code): Craves acts that incite separation, armed rebellion and devastating activities. It also considers the tasks that endanger the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country as a crime. It has a law of life imprisonment or imprisonment up to seven years.
BNS 196 (1) (b): It is related to promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, birthplace, residence, language etc. and to do harmful work to maintain harmony. It has a five -year imprisonment.
BNS 197 (1) (C): Related to the tasks that damage national unity. This includes allegations, claims or statements of any group that brings true devotion and loyalty towards the Constitution of India. It has a three -year imprisonment.
High Court said- “Gutter-like language”, case registered
On 14 May 2025, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered an FIR against Vijay Shah, considering the matter very serious. The court called his remarks “the language of the gutter” and called it against the honor of women and the dignity of the army. According to the court, such remarks from a cabinet minister not only hurts the self -esteem of Colonel Sophia, but also raises questions on the reputation of the Indian Army. Under the order, an FIR was lodged in serious sections of IPC, which provides for sentence of up to seven years.
Supreme Court reprimanded, next hearing on 16 May
Vijay Shah challenged the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order, but he did not get relief here either. While hearing on May 15, the Supreme Court clarified that the minister’s language is unacceptable and has hurt the dignity of his post. The court has fixed May 16 for the next hearing and said that a proper decision will be taken under the law in the case.
Support on social media, opposition attack
This case has become increasingly viral on social media. Thousands of people have come out in support of Colonel Sophia and are demanding action against Vijay Shah. At the same time, opposition parties have described it as a reflection of the “approach” of the BJP government towards women and army.
This dispute is now hot at the national level and in the coming days, its impact can also be seen on the politics of Madhya Pradesh.
