After Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement, the challenge before the selection committee is to choose the new captain. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, batsman Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant are at the forefront of the captaincy race. The new captain will have a difficult test as India has to go for a five -Test series on the tour of England in June. In such a situation, former Indian captain and veteran batsman Sunil Gavaskar has given a strong suggestion to the selection committee. He said that Bumrah should automatically become the captain of the Indian Test team.
Gavaskar even said to sports, “I think the selection committee should talk to Jaspreet Bumrah. The committee should ask him what you want? If Bumrah said that he is ready for captaincy, then he should be made captain. Five Test matches are to be held and will you be able to do? ” Let us know that 31 -year -old Bumrah has captained India in three Tests so far. There has been a fitness problem with him.
Bumrah captained India by 295 runs, captaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He was elected Player of the Match. He took command even after Rohit was out in the fifth and last Test but could not play the entire match due to back problems. Subsequently, he stayed out of the Indian team for three months due to unfit and returned to IPL 2025. Recently, Sky Sports report claimed that Bumrah has decided to stay away from the captaincy in view of the workload.
According to the report, Bumrah refused to become India’s next Test captain, after which Gill and Pant are at the forefront of this race. After Rohit, Bumrah was a favorite player for captaincy but he does not want to play in all the matches of the series due to the charge. Bumrah is less likely to play in five Tests against England and the selectors will give priority to the captain who can play continuously throughout the series.
