Hearing of Waqf Act postponed in Supreme Court, next date 15 May

New Delhi

The Supreme Court has deferred hearing on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The Supreme Court has set the hearing of the case on 15 May before Justice BR Gawai. BR Gawai will be the next Chief Justice of the country. In such a situation, the petition will now be kept in front of them. The current CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna is retiring on 13 May.

In the last hearing, the court stayed two main aspects of the law. In the hearing on 17 April, the bench of Chief Justice Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Vishwanathan was assured by the Center that he would neither unconfirmed the Waqf properties including Waqf Bio-user till May 5, nor would he make any appointment in the Central Waqf Council and Boards. The Center also urged not to stop the law without listening to it. After this, the court had fixed the date of hearing on 5 May.
