International Labor Day, May 1, is a day that highlights the importance of labor, respect for the toiling hands and the spirit of social justice. This day is not only recorded in history but also reminds the Chicago movement of 1886, in which the workers demanded 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of self -development rights, but it still expresses the struggle that workers do every day for their rights, respect and security.
The impact of labor welfare schemes in MCB district
Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district of Chhattisgarh which is one of the new districts of Chhattisgarh, the hard work and dedication of the working workers here has become an economic beating in the region. From the roads to the construction sites of this district, the sweat of the workers from the fields to the mines acts like a Sanjeevani in the progress of this area. When we look at the number of workers registered in the region, it becomes clear that this district has become the center of labor power. At the divisional level, 30,534 workers are registered under the Building and Other Construction Workers Board (BOC) and the name of 30,118 workers is registered in the unorganized workers’ welfare board. Even after the district formation, 6,257 workers have been registered in the building and other construction workers and 4,601 workers in the unorganized sector. Overall, registration of 71,510 workers is proof that the government’s schemes are reaching the people and workers are becoming aware of their rights.
Talking at the block level, 26,065 workers are registered in Manendragarh, while 22,847 workers are registered in Kharagwan block and 10,739 workers are registered in Bharatpur block, these statistics not only reflect administrative activism but also prove how important the social and economic participation of the workers are. For this purpose, many schemes are being run with the joint efforts of the Government of Chhattisgarh and the Government of India.
There are many important schemes of the Government of Chhattisgarh for workers
Schemes run by the Government of Chhattisgarh for workers are commendable initiative towards promoting the dignity of labor and improving the standard of living. So far 1,351 labor women have been benefited under the Mahtari Jatan Yojana. This scheme provides financial assistance to pregnant women for nutrition and prenatal care, so that maternity and baby life can remain safe and healthy. Under the Mukhyamantri Cycle Assistance Scheme, 2,672 students have been provided bicycles, so that they will facilitate going to school and do not disrupt education. Under the Chief Minister’s Labor Tool Assistance Scheme, 1,887 workers have been provided tools according to their work, so that they can become self -sufficient and bring proficiency in work. Under the Chief Minister’s Sewing Machine Assistance Scheme, 306 women have been given sewing machines for self -employment, making them financially strong. At the same time, keeping in mind the education of the children of the workers, the Chief Minister’s Naunihal Scholarship Scheme was launched, under which 3,536 children have received scholarship. This has increased the trend towards education and the paths of the future are open.
Under Chief Minister Noni Babu Meritorious Education Assistance Scheme, 211 students were provided incentives for scoring good marks in the board examination. Along with this, 1,031 workers have been trained in the Chief Minister’s Construction Mazd by Skill Development Scheme and informed them about new techniques and work efficiency, so that they can get better employment opportunities. Under the Security Equipment Assistance Scheme, 1,230 construction workers were given helmets, jackets, safety shoes etc. to ensure security at their workplace. Under the same Chief Minister Nirman Labor Death and Divyang Assistance Scheme, 78 labor families were given relief, whose members either became disabled or who died during work.
Under the Chief Minister Noni Empowerment Scheme, 494 girls were given financial assistance for marriage, education or self -employment. The government has not forgotten the old workers, they are being assisted to 56 beneficiaries in the form of pension under the Chief Minister Labor Sian Assistance Scheme. Apart from this, 507 students were benefited from free uniforms and book copy assistance scheme to the children, so that they are studying in a dignity manner, the labor children preparing for competitive examinations have been provided resources and guidance to 8 students under the free coaching assistance scheme. Construction workers have been helped to build 7 workers houses under the Chief Minister’s Construction Workers Housing Assistance Scheme for housing.
Central government’s labor welfare scheme is also being benefited
Talking about the central government’s schemes, 709 workers have been provided a life insurance cover of 2 lakh on nominal premium under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana. At the same time, under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, 1,412 workers have got the benefit of accident insurance, in which assistance of up to 2 lakh is given in case of accidental death or permanent disability. Along with this, another notable initiative of the Government of Chhattisgarh is “Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Shram Ann Assistance Scheme” which was launched on 29 March 2025 in the Manendragarh Municipal Council campus. Under this scheme, 200 to 250 workers are provided food for just 05 rupees per day. This is not only a solution to the problem of hunger, but it also gives workers a way to live life with self -esteem and dignity.
The Government of Chhattisgarh is committed to the welfare of workers, especially under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai. On the occasion of this International Labor Day, it is the duty of all of us to protect the rights of workers, respect them and participate in improving their lives. Because when the laborer smiles, the society smiles. When the laborer is safe, the nation is strong. And when the workers progress, the country moves forward.
