BJP MP Nishikant Dubey reacted sharply on the ongoing hearing in the Supreme Court regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. He said that if the law is the work of the Supreme Court, then the Parliament House should be closed. Dubey’s statement came at a time when the Supreme Court has recently started hearing several petitions challenging the amendments made in the Waqf Act.
The petitioners say that under this amended law, the provision of ‘Waqf by User’ and the provision of including non-Muslims in Waqf boards violates the fundamental rights of the Constitution.
The apex court expressed deep concern over some sections of the Waqf Act
The Supreme Court sought clear assurance from the central government during the hearing. The government assured the court that no non-Muslim would be appointed in the Waqf Board or Council until the next hearing and already notified Waqf properties will not be denotified. Also, the District Magistrates have been ordered not to make any changes in the condition of these properties.
On this, the court has asked the government to file initial reply and related documents within a week. Now the next hearing of this case will be held on 5 May. It is worth noting that this hearing is bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Vishwanathan. In two consecutive days of hearing on Wednesday and Thursday, the apex court expressed deep concern over some sections of the Waqf Act. The court has also indicated that it may consider interim banning some sections of the revised law.
