Justice BR Gawai will be the next Chief Justice of the country. The current Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna officially recommended to make Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai his successor on Wednesday (April 16). CJI has sent his name to the Union Law Ministry for approval. According to the report, Justice BR Gavai will take oath as Chief Justice on 14 May. The current Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna will retire on 13 May.

Justice Gawai will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. Justice Khanna, 64, has completed a six -month term as the Chief Justice of India. Justice Gawai is expected to take oath on 14 May. Justice Gawai will have a six -month term as a judge of the apex court.

According to tradition, Varmatan sends a proposal to the Union Law Ministry, nominating his successor. The Ministry had first sought a proposal for his successor from the Chief Justice. Justice Gawai will remain the Chief Justice of India for about six months as he is scheduled to retire in November. After Justice KG Balakrishnan, he will be the second Dalit to hold the post of Chief Justice. He was promoted to the top judicial post in the country in 2007.

Justice Gawai will have a 6 -month term and will retire on November 23, 2025. He became a judge of the Supreme Court in May 2019 itself and coincidence that the top court will become the Chief Justice in this month. On November 11 last year, CJI Khanna took over. He has sent a recommendation of the name of Justice BR Gawai before the Union Law Ministry. Retirement is 70 years old for the Supreme Court judge. Justice BR Gawai was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati district of Maharashtra. He was made part of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003, when he got the responsibility of additional judge.

After this, in November 2005, he became a permanent judge of the High Court. Justice Gawai has been part of several important decisions of the Supreme Court. In addition, they have been included in many constitutional selling. Justice Gawai was also a part of the 5 -member constitutional bench of the petitions challenging the decision to remove Article 370. Apart from this, he was also part of the bench rejecting the electoral bond scheme brought for political funding. Not only this, he was also involved in the bench hearing the applications filed against demonetisation.

Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Gawai enrolled as a lawyer on 16 March 1985. Initially, he worked under King S Bhonsle, former Advocate General and High Court judge till 1987. Then he practiced independently in the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990. After 1990, he practiced mainly in the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, focusing on constitutional and administrative law.

He worked as a permanent lawyer for Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Amravati University. He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court on 14 November 2003. Then on November 12, 2005, it was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court.

During his tenure, he presided over the main seat in Mumbai and various matters in the benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji. He was promoted to the post of Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 24 May 2019. His retirement date is scheduled on 23 November 2025.
