India’s new GPS-based toll system will replace Fastag

Since May 1, 2025, India is ready to see historical changes in its highway toll collection system. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is changing the widely used Fastag system with an advanced GPS-Based Toll System. This new system is designed to increase efficiency in toll charges across the country, reduce congestion and bring transparency. Whatever you should know about this big change in road trip is here.

Over the years, Fastag has largely strengthened toll payments, decreasing the waiting time at the toll plaza. However, some challenges such as misuse of tag, long queues on toll booths and system errors still remain. To remove these issues and to coordinate with global best practices, the Government of India is starting the GPS-based tolling system.

What is the new GPS-Based Toll System?

The upcoming new GPS-based toll system uses satellite navigation to track vehicles and calculate toll charges based on the actual distance traveled on national highways. This system is powered by advanced ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and GPS modules installed in vehicles.

The burden of toll tax will reduce the new toll system

After the implementation of this new toll system, people can get relief in toll tax. In this program, Gadkari assured that this would reduce the economic burden on passengers, which has been a major concern for a long time. Earlier too, he mentioned this toll policy in Parliament last month. And it was told that the government wants to make this system more user-friendly. It also wants to ensure that the country’s road infrastructure also remains strong.

Earning has increased from toll

Recent years have seen a significant increase in India’s toll collection. In 2023-24, the revenue reached Rs 64,809.86 crore, showing an increase of 35 percent as compared to the previous year. This increase is particularly notable compared to a collection of Rs 27,503 crore in 2019-20. However, the details of the new system are currently kept secret. But it is expected that this will be in line with the government’s comprehensive approach to infrastructure development and environmental stability.
