Beware of KYC call, account can be empty, guideline regarding fake calls

TRAI has issued a big alert to mobile users across the country. If you too have received a call to close the KYC update or SIM from a number, then be alert. This is the new way of cyber thugs to vacate the bank account.

Bank account can be empty…

In today’s digital age, where everything has gone online, cybercrime is also increasing rapidly. In view of this, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has given a serious warning to mobile users across the country.

What is the whole matter?

Recently, many mobile users have started getting such calls, in which the caller calls itself an officer of TRAI or a telecom company and says that if you do not get KYC updated soon, your SIM will be closed. On the pretext of this, he asks for personal information like OTP, Aadhaar number or bank details from the user.

TRAI has clearly stated that-

  • TRAI does not call any user for KYC updates.
  • TRAI has no right to close the SIM.
  • Only the concerned telecom company (eg Jio, Airtel etc.) can close the number based on KYC.
  • No agency has been allowed to call for KYC.

Why is this cheating?

Cyber criminals do this with the intention of stealing information of people and vacating the bank account. They scare the user and get OTP, which makes them approve banking or UPI transactions.

What to do if you come to such a call…

  • Do not give any information:
If someone calls himself a TRAI or a company employee and talks about closing KYC or SIM, then cut the call immediately.
  • Call 1930:
The National Cyber Helpline Number 1930, the Government of India, is operational for reporting such cases.
  • Use ‘Communication Partner’ portal or app:
Go to this government portal and select the “Chakshu” option and enter the call information.
  • Give information to the telecom company:
Report the number from which the call has come from your telecom company (Airtel, Jio, VI etc.).

Is the government taking any step on this?

Yes, the Government of India is now working towards replacing old SIM cards. It is believed that new technology based sim will be implemented in the coming time, so that such fraud can be prevented.

How to report fake calls…

  • National Cyber Helpline: 1930
  • Communication Partner Portal: www.sancharsaathi.gov.in
  • Use of ‘Chakshu’ feature: From here you can report fake numbers.

Important advice for users…

  • Do not share OTP with anyone.
  • Do not give information related to KYC or bank on calls.
  • Be cautious on the call from unknown number.
  • From time to time, confirm the real information from banks and telecom companies.
