Petrol and diesel will be expensive, government increased excise duty, LPG gas cylinder price increased by Rs 50

New Delhi
The price of LPG has been increased by Rs 50 per cylinder. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has given this information. He said that the price of LPG will be increased for both Ujjwala and common consumers. That is, now Rs 853 will have to be paid for gas cylinders instead of Rs 803. At the same time, 550 rupees will have to be paid to get a cylinder with Ujjwala scheme.

Earlier, the government has decided to increase the excise duty of petrol and diesel. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has given this information.

Now the price of cylinder gas is Rs 853

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said, “The price of cylinders per LPG will increase by Rs 50. It will increase from 500 to 550 (for PMUY beneficiaries) and for others it will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853. This is a step that we will review later.

The Union Minister further said, “We review it every 2-3 weeks. Therefore, the excise duty you have seen will not be on the consumers on petrol and diesel. The excise duty is aimed to make up to Rs 43,000 crore to the oil marketing companies, which has been the loss on the part of the gas.”

What did the government say?

According to the information given by the government, the price of LPG gas cylinder is being increased by Rs 50 from Tuesday 8 April 2025. This increase will apply to Ujjwala scheme and non-ujjwala i.e. all consumers. Let us tell you that under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), free gas connections are given to poor women, so that they can get clean cooking fuel i.e. LPG. The benefit of this scheme is given to poor women in rural areas. Now according to new prices, both Ujjwala scheme and other consumers will have to pay 50 rupees more for gas cylinders.

Increase in excise duty

On Monday, big news came about petrol-diesel in the country. In fact, the government has increased excise duty on petrol and diesel. On the one hand, where excise duty on petrol has been increased by Rs 2, the government has decided to increase the excise duty by 2 rupees on diesel. After this, it was feared that the prices of petrol and diesel in the country will increase, but the relief is that with the increase in excise duty from the government, it has been made clear that it will not have any effect on the common customers. The government has taken this decision amidst the fluctuations in the international prices of oil.

What is Excise Duty?

First of all, we understand what is this excise duty? So let us tell you that excise duty on petrol and diesel in India is a tax imposed by the central government, which makes a large part of the price of fuel. Currently, excise duty on petrol is Rs 19.90 per liter. At the same time, excise duty on diesel is about Rs 15.80 per liter. It is worth noting that in 2014, excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.48 per liter and Rs 3.56 on diesel, which increased several times later.

The public will not be burdened
The government may have increased excise duty on petrol and diesel, but it has denied the impact on customers. It has been clarified by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry that PSU oil marketing companies have been asked to increase the retail prices of petrol and diesel after the increase in excise rates.

Excise duty was reduced in 2022

In the year 2021, excise duty on petrol and diesel was ₹ 27.90 and ₹ 21.80 per liter. In May 2022, the central government had cut Rs 8 on petrol as a relief and Rs 6 on diesel, after which these rates were applicable. The base price of petrol and diesel in India is currently around Rs 32. On this, the central government is charging excise duty at Rs 33 and later different state governments charge VAT and cess according to their own, which increases the prices of diesel and petrol by three times.
