Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Pamban Rail Bridge (Bridge) in Rameswaram on the occasion of Ram Navami. After this, worship will also be done at the famous Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram. Later at around 1.30 pm, we will lay the foundation stone of various rail and road projects in Tamil Nadu costing more than Rs 8,300 crore and will dedicate them to the nation.
Let us tell you that the Pambon Bridge is the first (first) vertical lift of India (India). The bridge is 2.07 km long crossing the Pakistani waterclass, which will provide better connectivity. The new bridge would replace the old Pamban Bridge in 1914, which was a cantillar structure and connected the Rameswaram Island to the main territory of India. Over time, this bridge was unable to meet growing transport requirements and was affected by the effects of marine environment. In 2019, the central government approved the construction of this new bridge.
Characteristics of Pambon Bridge
- 1. Sailor Spain: The 72.5 meter long sailor span of the bridge can rise up to 17 meters, so that large ships can pass through it.
- 2. Increase in height: This bridge is 3 meters high than the old bridge, which will improve marine connectivity.
- 3. Quality of Material: To make the bridge strong and long term, high quality stainless steel is built and its surface is cooked with special protective paint.
- 4. Design: Two tracks have been arranged in the bridge subcontinent.
Why Pamban Bridge needed
- 1. The Old Pamban Bridge was unable to meet growing traffic and modern transport requirements.
- 2. The new Pamban Bridge is designed for heavy rail traffic and sharp trains.
- 3. This bridge is also convenient for the sea route.
Construction and technology
- 1. Upul was manufactured using modern engineering methods and advanced materials such as stainless steel.]
- 2. Anti-cooking was used to maintain durability in the marine environment to ensure the longevity of the bridge.
- 3. Keeping in mind the challenges of the site, the lift span was launched by auto launching method and installed in the right place by hydraulic jacking.
Challenges –
- 1. Challenges like storms, cyclones and seismic activities were received during the construction work.
- 2. There were difficulties in transporting the construction material of the bridge to the remote site.
- 3. Despite all these challenges, the project was safely completed.
The new Pamban Bridge reflects India’s growing infrastructure capabilities. This bridge gets included in the category of global bridges such as Golden Gate, Tower and Oresund. This bridge demonstrates the skills of Indian engineering and proves the ability to overcome geographical and environmental challenges. Its lifetime is estimated to be more than 100 years.
