If you have taken a third AC ticket, sometimes you can get a chance to travel in the first AC

New Delhi
Indian Railways takes millions of passengers to their destination every day. Most of the people travel in third AC, second AC, first AC or sleeper coach. But very few people know that if you have taken a third AC ticket, sometimes you can get a chance to travel in the first AC and that too without any additional charge.

What is the railway’s automatic upgradation scheme?
This special scheme of the railway is called “Auto Upgradation Scheme”. Under this, if the seats remain vacant in a high class (eg First AC) and there are travelers with confirmed or RAC tickets in the bottom class (eg third AC), then they can be upgraded to the top class without any extra charge.

Which passengers get benefit?
This facility is available only to passengers with confirmed or RAC tickets. Waiting tickets do not get the benefit of this scheme. Before the upgrade, the railway also gives you information by SMS or email.

What to do at the time of booking?
When you book a train ticket, an option comes – “Consider for Auto Upgradation”…. If you tick this option, then the Railways consider upgrading you.

Understand with an example
Suppose you have booked tickets in third AC and it is in RAC. If the third AC is full before running the train, but some seats in the first AC are vacant, then the railway can shift you to the First AC. You will not be charged any additional fee for this.
