Hit wicket controversy in the first match of IPL 2025

New Delhi

The IPL 2025 started on Saturday 22 March. The first match was played between KKR and RCB in Kolkata. RCB won in this match, but a controversy was also seen in the first match of the tournament. Batting Kolkata Knight Riders opener Sunil Naren was attached to the bat stumps, but the umpire did not give him a hit wicket out. Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Rajat Patidar, batsman Virat Kohli and other players were also surprised. Why was the batsman not given a hit wicket out? This question is in everyone’s mind, but know what the rules are called about this.

It is generally seen that while batting, the batsman’s bat, a cricketing gear or any body part is on stumps, then the batsman is given a hit wicket out. However, this did not happen in this case. The fourth ball of the 8th over of KKR’s innings went over Sunil Naren. Sunil Naren tried to play the ball, but seeing the ball going from above, he took down his bat. During this time, his bat went far back on the stumps. In such a situation, the batsman should have been given a hit wicket out. However, the rules came into force here.

In fact, when Sunil Naren’s bat hit the stumps, the Square leg umpire had declared the ball wide just before that. In this way the ball was dead at the same time. After this, the decision of the umpire would be valid. The playing conditions of the IPL also say that if the ball is dead, then the body will not be given to the batsman from the stumps. Rule 35 shows this. Even Virat Kohli, Tim David and Rajat Patidar appealed a little, but then they escaped from being a hit wicket. If the ball was not wide, Sunil Naren would have to return to the pavilion.
