WhatsApp has revealed in its latest India monthly report that 99 lakh Indian accounts were banned in January 2025. This action has been taken to prevent increasing scams, spams and frauds on the platform to maintain its safety and reliability. This platform has also clarified that if users continue to violate the rules, more accounts will be banned.

This report of WhatsApp has been published in compliance with Rule 4 (1) (D) and Rule 3A (7) of Rules, 2021 Rules, 2021 Rules, Report of WhatsApp. In this report, WhatsApp has emphasized on efforts to maintain a safe and reliable platform for its users.
How many accounts were banned?
WhatsApp banned 9,967,000 Indian accounts in January 2025. Of these, 1,327,000 accounts were banned by the platform proactively, that is, action was taken before the complaints of users. This ban was done based on the integrated detection system of WhatsApp, which identifies suspicious behavior.
Big disclosure in META report
META’s transparency report states that WhatsApp banned 8.45 million (over 84 lakh) accounts in India. This action was taken to follow the provisions of Section 4 (1) (D) and Section 3A (7) of the Information Technology Act. The report stated that the ban was implemented between August 1 and August 31.

1.66 million accounts were immediately blocked due to serious violations.

WhatsApp received 9,474 complaints during January 2025. In 239 cases, accounts were banned or other corrective action was taken. These complaints also included emails and postal letters sent by users, which were sent to the complaint officer of India in WhatsApp.
How does WhatsApp detect and ban accounts?
WhatsApp reported that he uses a multi-layer security system, identifying accounts involved in harmful activities. This system works at three levels –
1. During registration: When a new account is created, accounts with suspicious activities are flagged.

3. Based on user reports: If a user complains of an account, WhatsApp examines that account and takes necessary action.
