New Delhi
Transactions may be charged very soon through UPI and RuPay Debit Card. That is, doing UPI will not be free, you may have to pay separate money for this. In fact, according to a media report, the government is evaluating the proposal to bring back the merchant fee on transactions made by Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Rupay Debit Card. If this happens, then if digital payment will become expensive.

What is detail
According to media reports, the government is preparing to impose merchant fees on these transactions. Explain that the merchant discount rate (MDR) in the digital payment endsdry is called that a merchant or shopkeeper has to pay the payment service. This fee was waived by the government in the year 2022. It is now reported that the government may consider implementing it again. Currently, there is no MDR applied to UPI and Rupay Debit Card Payments, which are facilitated through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Review is being done
The media report quoted a banker as saying that a formal request to re -implement the MDR on UPI transactions for big traders has been submitted to the Central Government by the banking industry and the concerned departments are reviewing it. According to the proposal, MDR can be re -implemented on the basis of their GST filing for traders with annual traders of more than Rs 40 lakh. The government can also consider a level pricing model for UPI, where big traders will have to pay more fees, while small businesses will have to pay low fees. The report said that UPI payment will be free for traders with annual trading less than Rs 40 lakh.

According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in February 2025, UPI recorded 16.11 billion transactions, which had an amount of about 22 trillion rupees. The total transaction in January was 16.99 billion.
