On Wednesday, a meeting of 35 parties was held in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of CM MK Stalin in Tamil Nadu. In this meeting, Stalin moved a proposal, on which everyone agreed unanimously. In this proposal, PM Modi has demanded that the ratio of the 1971 census for delimitation should be considered as the basis. On the basis of this, Lok Sabha seats should be decided and this limit should be retained for the next 30 years. The proposal also said that other states besides South India should also be encouraged for population control. Leaders of the main opposition party AIADMK were also present in this meeting. This proposal said that the central government should amend the Constitution and it should be decided that if the number of MPs increases, then its proportion is similar to the present.
His clear demand was that if the delimitation is made on the basis of the data of the new census and the seats increase, then its proportion should remain the same, which remains at present. He said that there should be nothing like this with the states of South India including Tamil Nadu, their seats should be reduced and their political strength should also decrease. Apart from BJP, leaders of 4 other small parties did not reach their meeting. The BJP said that the law and order situation in the state is bad and MK Stalin is playing a card to divert attention from it. BJP state president K.K. Annamalai and Home Minister Amit Shah have reiterated that the seats of the states of South India will not be reduced.
CM Stalin once again said that there is no problem with increasing number of MPs, but there is no shortage in our strength. He said that people have done family planning here. After this, if we get his punishment, then it is injustice. The proposal said, “To promote family planning in all states, the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had assured in 2000 that the 1971 census should be delimited. Now PM Modi should also give such assurance that this will remain the measure of delimitation of Lok Sabha seats for the next 30 years from 2026.
He said that the people of Tamil Nadu are not against delimitation, but it should not happen that it becomes a punishment for us. We have implemented many welfare schemes. Family planning is done and women are empowered. Due to this, the population here has not increased wildly and in lieu of this, it will be wrong if we are harmed instead of benefits.
