On online payment will not be available in UPI ID from February 1

New Delhi

The rules have been changed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in the past and it has been clear that no special characters can be included in the UPI ID. The platform has made it clear that after February 1, 2025, the payment will fail if there is special characters in the UPI IDS or Transaction ID. If you have a special character in your UPI ID, then you have to make changes immediately.

A circular was issued by NPCI on 9 January, it mentions new rules. It clearly states that now the UPI Transaction ID can only be ultanumeric. That is, it can only have numbers and letters and no special character should be part of it. If there are special characters in any transaction ID, the system will automatically reject it.

What is the guideline of NPCI
This instruction of NPCI is going to change from February 1, 2025. The NPCI has made it clear to the UPI operators that they should start using alphanumeric character for UPI transaction ID, otherwise the central system will not allow any UPI transactions from that app. The responsibility of following this instrument is on the payment app.

UPI transactions abroad also
NPCI has taken this decision at a time when retail payment operators have targeted to increase the use of UPI option for transactions. Digital transactions have emerged rapidly since the demonetisation in India in 2016. Apart from this, UPI transactions are also being done abroad. UPI transactions are taking place in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, UAE, Mauritius and France.

NPCI had given advice earlier also
The National Payments Interface of India had already advised people to use alphanumeric characters instead of special characters for UPI ID. After which many people started using it, but still some users are not following it. Now NPCI is going to adopt strictness to get it followed.

All banks also instructed
The central system has not been asked not to accepted all such transactions, whose special characters are connected in UPI ID. Apart from this, NPCI has also advised all banks to comply with it.

You have to make this change

Although the popular payment apps automatically generate UPI ID, but users get the option to create their custom UPI ID or change the existing ID. If you have a special character in your current UPI ID and are getting the option to edit it, then remove the special characters. Apart from this, select payment apps will automatically make changes in the current ID.

The new rules coming into force from February 1 means that if you do not make changes in time, you will not be able to make UPI payment. If UPI payments fail again and again, it may also be due to your UPI ID or Transaction ID to be special characters.
Easy to understand with the example

If you want to understand easily, then if your phone number is 994455778666 and your bank is HDFC Bank, then the payment apps make your UPI IDS themselves. For example, 99445577866@Okhdfcbank can be your ID. However, now the payment will not be made through it and only 994457786666okhdfcbank IDs will be valid. Also if you created a custom UPI ID If it is, you will have to change it too.

For example, if you have created an ID like Rohit@Sharma@UPI, now special characters will have to be removed from it. In such a situation, your ID will have to do something like rohitsharmaupi.
