RG Tax Case: Death penalty for convict, hearing on CBI’s petition in Calcutta High Court yesterday

Kolkata
A bench of the Calcutta High Court will hear the petition of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) tomorrow. In the petition, the CBI has demanded death penalty for Sanjay Roy in the case of rape of a trainee female doctor of Medical College and Hospital.

A special court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment on 20 January in the case of rape and murder of a trainee female doctor. The CBI has approached the bench of Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi demanding a death sentence for the convict.

The state’s Advocate General Kishore Dutta filed a petition on Tuesday in the Calcutta High Court on behalf of the West Bengal government. In the petition, the government has demanded a ‘death’ sentence for the guilty. Incidentally, a bench of Justice Debangasu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi will hear the case. However, the hearing on the petition of the state government will determine the property and the plea of the petition.

According to the lawyer of the central agency, the investigating agency CBI and the victim’s parents in the case can only file such a petition in the High Court, not the state government, which is not the case in the case.

It is worth noting that on 9 August last year, the body of a trainee female doctor was recovered from a seminar hall inside the Medical College and the hospital premises. Kolkata Police investigated on the basis of CCTV footage and evidence found from the crime scene. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was then arrested. However, after a five -day preliminary investigation by the city police, the Calcutta High Court handed over the charge of investigation to the CBI.

Sanjay Roy is the main accused in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charge sheet in this case. Sanjay Roy was convicted under Section 64, Section 66 and Section 103 (I) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).
